In the Mouth of Madness Movie Review

One of my favorite genres is Cosmic Horror and one of my favorite writers is Stephen King. That’s what drew me to John Carpenter’s In The Mouth of Madness (not to be confused with H.P. Lovecraft’s At The Mountains of Madness). The film stars Sam Neil as freelance insurance investigator John Trent and Julia Carmen as editor Linda Styles as they attempt to track down missing horror author Sutter Cain, who is about to unleash a race of eldritch horrors on humanity.

Cain is obviously a reference to Stephen King, though King himself was name-dropped by Linda. The movie borrowed themes and ideas from both H.P. Lovecraft and Stephen King, (the town of Hobb’s End was very Stephen King) but never ripped them off and created its own cosmic horror story.

Trent’s initial skepticism and attempts to disprove the impending supernatural doom was fun to watch and Linda gets a far better role in the story than most female characters in John Carpenter’s other films, having far more agency and dialogue. Her dynamic as someone more accepting of the supernatural vs Trent’s insistence on it all being fake was fun to watch as well, as both of them brought up good points to support their arguments

I don’t handle horror movies very well, the Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark movie gave me nightmares for two days despite being a very PG horror movie. In The Mouth Of Madness, however, did not actually scare me. There were some freaky body horror moments in the last half of the movie when Hobb’s End succumbs to Cain’s influences but they were brief and too human looking to be genuienly scary. The story and its message about how fiction can influences us and make an impact on the real world stuck with me, but the fear did not. The movie was scary-fun, not scary-disturbing.

The special effects were obviously practical and sparsely, but effectively, used and the cinematography is excellent, especially when compared to John Carpenter’s other films where the cameras felt more static. People complained that it was “complicated” or “pretentious” but as someone who grew up reading Stephen King and other horror and horror adjacent novels, In The Mouth of Madness wasn’t hard to follow at all.

Excellent horror movie, 9/10. Recommended for fans of horror novels.
